Pam Wernich
Counsellor - Plumstead, Southern Suburbs, Cape Town
BA (Hons) (UCT), Graduate Diploma in Counselling (SACAP)
Counselling can offer a safe, companioned passage through a crisis, a loss, an illness, or perhaps a more general sense of being ill-at-ease in the world. At my counselling practice in Plumstead, I work with people seeking relief from a variety of concerns and predicaments. My own particular interests include – but are not restricted to – loss and bereavement, illness / health challenges, crisis points and women’s issues. I have also had some experience working with women survivors of domestic abuse.
As a Focusing-Oriented Counsellor, I value an approach that facilitates discovery of fresh, forward-living capacities, whilst simultaneously nurturing attitudes of openness and friendly curiosity towards oneself.
My training includes a BA (Hons) degree from the University of Cape Town and a Graduate Diploma in Counselling from the South African College of Applied Psychology. I have also trained in Focusing-oriented therapeutic work, and I am certified as a Focusing-Oriented Professional with the Focusing Institute in New York. Focusing was developed by psychologist and philosopher Eugene Gendlin at the University of Chicago during the 1960s. In collaboration with Carl Rogers, he undertook extensive research into the efficacy of psychotherapy, and went on to devise a protocol of the skills in self-attending that he observed in those clients who had successful outcomes in therapy. He called this protocol Focusing.
My counselling work and life's journey takes its sustenance from regular mindfulness practice.
