Centre for Psychological Services and Career Development (PsyCaD) at the University of Johannesburg (UJ)
The Centre for Psychological Services and Career Development (PsyCaD) at the University of Johannesburg offers a broad spectrum of psychological and educational services to children, adolescents, students, staff and families with the aim of enhancing their psychological fitness to manage personal life challenges, increase productivity and to optimize their performance. This includes dealing with trauma and stress.
Counselling is offered to individuals, couples, families and groups.
All contact with PsyCaD is highly professional and strictly confidential.
PsyCaD is accredited by the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a site for training of Intern Psychologists and Intern Psychometrists.
PsyCaD professional staff are Counselling, Clinical and/or Educational Psychologists registered with the HPCSA.
The Director of PsyCaD, Prof Gertie Pretorius is a respected professional and academic with numerous articles and papers to her credit.
PsyCaD professional staff include Educational, Clinical and Counselling Psychologists, registered Counsellors and Psychometrsts.
PsyCaD Services offered include:
Personal Counselling
Focuses on areas such as
- Relationship difficulties, burnout, stress or work-related concerns
- Anxiety, depression
- Bereavement, divorce counselling
- HIV/AIDS counselling
Psycho-therapy
- Short and long-term psycho-therapeutic services for children, adolescents, parents, individuals, couples and families.
- Children and adults are assisted with behavioural, attention, scholastic or concentration difficulties, sibling rivalry or coping with divorce and with emotional problems such as anxiety, depression or abuse.
Trauma Counselling
- Counselling is offered to victims of traumatic experiences such as armed robbery, hijacking, rape and assault.
- Services can be provided at very short notice after reporting of the traumatic event.
Psychological and Educational Assessment
- Included here are intellectual and personality assessments for adults and children from pre-school to adolescence.
- Individuals are referred to PsyCaD for assessment of intelligence, learning development, attention and emotional or behavioural difficulties.
Career Assessment and Counselling
- Grade 9 learners are assisted with subject choices for Grades 10-12.
- Grade 11 and 12 learners are assisted with career choices and career-related decisions.
- Assessments are used to provide greater clarity about an individual’s potential, interests, values and work-related personality characteristics.
Career Management
- Assists employees to enhance their skills to advance their careers.
- Identifies the interest, aptitude and abilities of employees.

(Fees may be claimed back from medical aid).
Career Assessment fees:
- Fixed group assessment : R 950.00
- Individual assessment (Child): R2 000.00
- Individual assessment (Adult): R2 350.00
Therapy fees:
Consultation sessions (individual or family)
- 21 - 30 minutes: R190.00
- 31 - 50 minutes: R320.00
- 51 - 60 minutes: R390.00
